Such is the crisis over the current situation, the Prime Minister has now called in Stephen Barclay to oversee attempts to draw up new policies. It is understood the Government is concerned the number of migrant crossings may spike next spring due to the warmer temperatures, while there are also no current viable policies available to stop them. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster will now be called in to draft policies and make sure all departments are now involved where possible.
One senior Government source revealed the Prime Minister now sees the issue as one of the Government’s main priorities.
Mr Johnson is also thought to be worried that nearly two years on from his election, nothing has been resolved.
A source told The Times: “Boris is exasperated.
“He sees this as one of his biggest priorities and he’s concerned that after two years there are still no viable solutions.
“He’s told ministers to redouble efforts to fix this, no matter how difficult it is.
“If it looks bad now, it’s going to look much worse in spring when it’s warmer.”
A plan to turn back vessels in the Channel had been devised by the Border Force but has yet to be used due to concerns vessels may sink at sea.
There are also plans to send migrants to Albania for processing.

There has been no confirmation over the deal and the country itself has ruled out any agreement of this kind.
Albania’s prime minister, Edi Rama said in an interview: “Albania will never be a country where very rich countries will set up camps for their refugees. Never.”
In July, Ms Patel signed a £53million deal with the French government to increase patrols.
However, as of last week, 24,500 migrants have now crossed the channel into the UK.

Amid the continuing number of successful crossings, Ms Patel had threatened to withhold money from the French authorities.
Ms Patel met with her French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin, to discuss the current crisis.
A statement read after the meeting: “Both the Home Secretary and interior minister agreed to strengthen operational cooperation further.

“More must be done to stop the dangerous crossings.
“They agreed to accelerate the delivery of the commitments made in the joint agreement of July 2021 to deliver on their joint determination to prevent 100% of crossings and make this deadly route unviable.”
A joint technical group will also be drawn up to help resolve issues.
