Boris Johnson’s plan to save Tory party if he fails to deliver Brexit on time revealed

Political scientist and polling guru Sir John Curtice claimed that Boris Johnson will likely shift the blame of his Brexit failures to Remainer MPs and the EU. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Sir John explained that through doing this Mr Johnson hopes to still secure loyal Conservative votes for the party. The political scientist added another pressing hurdle would be for Mr Johnson to steal votes from the Brexit Party despite not delivering a satisfying Brexit.

Sir John said: “There won’t be a massive movement of allegiances in a general election.

“There are a number of polls out there that have asked how would you vote if ‘x’ happened, ‘x’ being various varieties of Brexit.

“And basically what you discover is that it doesn’t matter to the Labour or Liberal Democratic vote what happens to Brexit.

“This is because for the most part these people are opposed to Brexit and therefore they are not fussed.

“The question is not whether there will be mass movement but rather what happens to the gains Conservative Party has made in the last 6 weeks by squeezing the Brexit Party vote.

“If people are to be taken seriously, there is a serious risk that people will switch back to the Brexit Party again.

“There are two things the Prime Minister would have to hope for.

“One is that he would be able to cast the blame elsewhere but it is clear that there are those on Boris Johnson’s side of the House of Commons who are not entirely sure about the direction in which he is heading.

“Secondly, trying to go down the no-deal path.

“But as I have already said, the problem with going down the no-deal path in an election and trying to persuade Brexit Party voters to vote for the Tories is that he may just end up with too much trouble in his own party.

“So at the end of the day, Boris has some fairly clear political obstacles.

“It just doesn’t need very many people to go from Conservative to the Brexit Party and Boris Johnson’s chances of getting a majority just go up in smoke.

“But of course, that also means given the dire state of the Labour Party in the polls we would simply be heading for a Parliament that would be even more hung than the current one.

“It would be a Parliament that would not allow Boris Johnson to carry on being Prime Minister.

“We know this because the one thing we do know about the SNP and Liberal Democrats, no matter how much they dislike Jeremy Corbyn, are not going to allow Boris Johnson to remain in office.”
