Boris Johnson’s former adviser savages John Bercow: ‘Pompous, pious and interventionist!’
Kulveer Ranger, a former adviser to Boris Johnson during his time as Mayor, responded to claims John Bercow was a Conservative. Mr Ranger said: “That tells you everything about politics when the Speaker claims something yet the visible reflection of where his support comes from is the opposite.” Mr Bercow has been in the position of Speaker of the House since 2009.
Mr Ranger said: “It’s been a long personal statement for 10 years, it felt like at times.”
TalkRadio host Alexis Conran asked: “Are you sad to see him go?”
The former adviser said: “No, bombastic, likes the sound of his own voice, interventionist Speaker who has intervened in Parliament incessantly.
“The Speaker needs to defend Parliament when, say, the executive has a huge majority with which they can do whatever they want.”
He continued: “Not when it’s razor sharp.”
Mr Conran added: “I quite liked his belittling comments to all MPs because they were just amusing in his manner and his voice.
“But I also think they were hugely destructive in the atmosphere and have driven politics into this real partisan.
“I can imagine if you were a junior or senior MP being belittled by John Bercow in front of all your colleagues and the national media, it can only create a feeling of resentment and anger.”
He continued: “And I don’t think that should have been promoted.”
Mr Ranger said: “I think he’ll be remembered as a divisive speaker, who did a few good things.
Mr Bercow announced his intention to stand down at the end of parliamentary proceedings on October 31.

Mr Bercow has come under fire for attacking the Prime Minister in a recent speech.
He said: “One should no more refuse to request an extension of Article 50 because of what one might regard as the noble end of departing from the EU as soon as possible.
“Than one could possibly excuse robbing a bank on the basis that the cash stolen would be donated to a charitable cause immediately afterwards.”
Mr Bercow also claimed the scenes in Parliament over recent weeks are just a “mere prelude for yet more drama”.
He told an audience: “Let me make myself crystal clear: Ladies and gentlemen, the only form of Brexit which we will have, whenever that might be, will be a Brexit that the House of Commons has explicitly endorsed.”
