Boris Johnson reportedly ‘nearly drowned’ during a family summer holiday in Scotland last year.

The prime minister spent time on the north-west Highland coast with then-fiancee Carrie Symonds and their baby son, Wilfred.

The staycation seemingly passed off without incident but now insiders have claimed Mr Johnson needed to be rescued after being swept out to sea.

Unnamed sources told The Times he was taken out by the current while either canoeing or paddle-boarding.

One told the paper: ‘He got swept away and found himself going further and further out.’

According to the report, the PM’s personal security detail were watching from the shore and at one point considered calling in a rescue helicopter.

He managed to paddle halfway back but his protection officers needed to strip off and swim out to help him the rest of the way, The Times claims.

The source said: ‘It was all fine in the end but it could have been a catastrophe.’

Downing Street wouldn’t be drawn on the story when approached by The Times.

It wouldn’t be the first time the Prime Minister has got himself into bother while enjoying a recreational activity.

He famously got stuck on a zip wire waving two Union Flags during the 2012 Olympic Games in London and was also filmed wiping out a child during a rugby game in Japan in 2015.

Mr Johnson is known to be a reasonably strong swimmer and was pictured having a dip in Carbis Bay during the G7 summit earlier this year.

While he avoided any serious injury during the stay, the family’s 2020 Scotland holiday did need to be cut short after details appeared in the press.

After a picture of a tent erected in a field next to the cottage where he was staying emerged, the PM returned to London early.
