Prime Minister Boris Johnson has slipped in the polls to a surging Labour Party. The Conservatives appear to be in absolute free-fall after a disastrous December for the credibility of the Government. It appears the Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, is taking full advantage of unrest in the Tory camp.

Labour are up six points in the latest Politico Poll of Polls, of national parliament voting intention.

Thirty-two percent of people said they would vote Conservative if a general election were tomorrow.

At the same time, 38 percent said they would vote Labour, in a major boost for Mr Starmer.

Labour overtook the Tories in the poll back on November 26; the first time Mr Johnson fell behind the Opposition for the first time since taking over as Prime Minister.

The Government were rocked by a disastrous few weeks for its public image.

It started with the Westminster sleaze scandal, whereby the PM defended disgraced former MP Owen Paterson.

Mr Paterson committed a breach of lobbying rules, and was paid more than £100,000 for doing so.

The Prime Minister whipped his Conservative MPs to back a vote to change the appeals process in the Commons – a move which would effectively save his colleague. But after public outcry, the decision was reversed.

It was later reported that several Downing Street parties took place last year, when the rest of the country was observing Covid rules.

The Government consistently claimed that no Covid rules were broken at the time.

However, a video featuring the PM’s press secretary, Allegra Stratton, revealed Downing Street officials joking about breaking the rules.

Mr Johnson later ordered the cabinet secretary to investigate the alleged breaches.

But, the cabinet secretary, Simon Case, stepped down after it emerged a quiz took place in the Cabinet Office on December 17 last year.

Elsewhere, a YouGov poll showed 71 percent of people think Mr Johnson is doing “badly” as Prime Minister.

Just 23 percent of people were backing the Conservative leader, claiming he was performing “well” in his position.

Since taking over as Prime Minister, the gap between those two positions has never been wider.

After weeks of falling support, the Tories lost their North Shropshire seat in the House of Commons, after losing this month’s by-election.

The seat, which formally belonged to Mr Paterson, had been held by the Conservatives for almost 200 years.

The Liberal Democrats won the by-election on December 16, overturning a Tory majority of almost 23,000.

However, despite losing the North Shropshire seat, the Conservatives still hold a 162-seat majority in the Commons.
