The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the app, which alerts people when they need to self-isolate. Mr Johnson’s spokesman said it is an “important tool” in the fight against the virus.
He said: “A large number of the population continues to use the app and it has been an important tool in getting people to isolate and break the chain of transmission.
“It is important that people continue to isolate if they are asked to do so.
“We continue to ask people to isolate if they are asked to through the app.”
Mr Johnson’s spokesman added: “The Prime Minister has been clear that he continues to use it.
“We continue to ask people to isolate if they are asked to through the app.”
One Government adviser told the Times there is a “rising” numbers of users deleting the app.
It comes after Pfizer and BioNTech announced they will develop a coronavirus booster vaccine to target the more transmissible Delta variant.
On Thursday, the pharmaceutical giants confirmed they are working on the additional shot to help tackle the strain.
The new variant has become the dominant strain in the UK and the US.
Clinical research could begin as early as August, subject to regulatory approvals.
In a statement, the firms said: “As seen in real world evidence released from the Israel Ministry of Health, vaccine efficacy has declined six months post-vaccination, at the same time that the Delta variant is becoming the dominate variant in the country.
“These findings are consistent with an ongoing analysis from the companies’ Phase 3 study.
“That is why we have said, and we continue to believe that it is likely, based on the totality of the data we have to date, that a third dose may be needed within six to 12 months after full vaccination.”
