Boris Johnson to set out living with Covid plan in press conference today

Boris Johnson is set to hold what could be the last ever Covid press conference this afternoon as he announces plans to phase out the country’s remaining virus restrictions.

The PM will address the nation from Downing Street at a time to be confirmed after outlining his ‘living with Covid’ plan in the House of Commons at 3.30pm.

It is not yet known whether his main advisors – Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance – will join him at the podium and their participation will be closely monitored to see whether they back the PM on a plan that has been called ‘reckless’.

Mr Johnson will stress the country is moving to a place where people can make their own decisions on how to prevent the virus from spreading, rather than being mandated by the state.

Rules on self isolation and testing will be decided within individual households and workplaces rather than being legally mandated.

It means it won’t be against the law to leave your house if you have Covid and there will also soon be a time when free tests will not be widely available.

The PM is meeting with his Cabinet to get sign-off on the plan on Monday morning before his appearance in parliament this afternoon.

Speaking before its unveiling, he said the proposal would be about ‘finally giving people back their freedom’ after ‘one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history’.
