Boris Johnson to resign as PM rather than sign Brexit extension according to shock report

The resignation is reportedly planned to take place on October 18, just 14 days before the UK is set to depart the EU. Earlier this month Parliament passed a law requiring Mr Johnson to request another extension unless it explicitly approves either a deal or a no deal exit.

However the Prime Minister has continued to insist he intends to take Britain out of the EU on October 31.

According to a dramatic report in The Mirror if this can’t be achieved he will resign rather than face the humiliation of requesting a Brexit delay.

The paper reports Mr Johnson will insist all members of the Cabinet join him, collapsing the Government.

This could mean the request to delay Brexit is handed to the EU by House of Commons speaker John Bercow, rather than the Prime Minister.

Speaking to The Mirror an insider said: “We say the Speaker is constitutionally entitled to do this with Parliament’s support.”

Should this happen there will be 14 days for opposition MPs to attempt to form an alternative Government.

If they fail it will trigger a General Election, likely to take place in December.

Despite MPs voting to block a no deal Brexit on October 31 earlier this month some are concerned Mr Johnson will find a loophole leading to Britain departing on this date.

As a result some opposition politicians believe Mr Johnson must be removed as Prime Minister, with a confidence vote potentially taking place next week.

Labour are insisting any new Government must be led by their leader Jeremy Corbyn.

However MPs from the Liberal Democrats, Change UK and Tory rebels have said they will not back Mr Corbyn as interim Prime Minister.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has suggested her party will give Mr Corbyn its temporary backing.

SNP MP Stewart Hosie commented: “We have to do that because there is now no confidence that the prime minister will obey the law and seek the extension that Parliament voted for only a few weeks ago.

“If we are serious about the extension that is the only game in town.”

The Conservative Party conference begins in Manchester today under the slogan ‘Get Brexit Done’.

However MPs voted against holding a conference recess, meaning Tory parliamentarians could have to rush back to Westminster for crucial votes.

Labour’s Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer has sensationally suggested the Government could use fears of rioting as an excuse to invoke the Civil Contingencies Act, and use that to try and force through Brexit on October 31.

Speaking to The Observer he said: “Whipping up the idea of riots or even deaths if we do not leave the EU on 31 October is the height of irresponsibility.

“But it is also pretty obviously being orchestrated.

“If this is part of a government plan to misuse powers under emergency legislation, I can assure the prime minister we will defeat him in court and in parliament.”

However no evidence was presented to support the assertion.

Government sources have recently suggested Britain could see scenes similar to those in France with the Gilets Jaunes protests.
