Boris Johnson to lead Omicron press conference at 5pm
Boris Johnson will address the nation at 5pm today amid fears over the spread of Omicron just before Christmas.
The prime minister is expected to update the country on the progress of the booster jab programme, after he vowed to offer a third jab to all adults by the end of the month.
It is understood he will not be announcing any further coronavirus measures.
It comes as an expert warns the Omicron doubling rate is now under two days in most regions across the UK.
Dr Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said the new variant is ‘probably the most significant threat we’ve had since the start of the pandemic’.
Thousands of people are queuing online today to book their boosters, with 30-minute waits reported on the website.
Huge lines have also been seen at vaccine centres, as some Brits report they’re waiting hours, even with appointments.
Mr Johnson will be joined at the press conference by Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty and the Medical Director of Primary Care for NHS England, Dr Nikki Kanani.
