Boris Johnson refuses to lift lockdown but says UK is nearly OVER first wave ‘Keep going’

Boris Johnson on Monday returned to work after spending the past two weeks recovering from the coronavirus at the Prime Minister’s country home at Chequers.

In his first speech since his return to Downing Street, Mr Johnson confirmed he will not be lifting the lockdown measures imposed six weeks ago as he conceded the “first phase” of the battle against the virus is nearly over.

Speaking outside Downing Street, Mr Johnson said: “This is not only a disease but an economic disaster and we would be forced to reimpose restrictions, causing longer and more lasting damage.

“I refuse to throw away the effort and the sacrifice of the British people.

“I ask you to contain your impatience because I think we’re coming now to the end of the first phase of this conflict.”
