In a survey of leader characteristics, Mr Johnson only beat his Labour rival, Sir Keir Starmer, in terms of charisma – 20 to 11. In every other trait, Sir Keir defeated the Prime Minister, who has suffered from a string of scandals surrounding paid lobbying and alleged Christmas parties held last year. In the poll from SavantaComRes, just six percent believe the Prime Minister to be trustworthy, 15 believed Sir Keir to be so.

Of the 2,096 people asked, a further 10 percent believed the Prime Minister to be genuine as opposed to Sir Keir’s 18, who also received 17 percent of the vote in terms of honesty.

Sir Keir also received 27 percent for intelligence, above Mr Johnson’s 21.

Both drew level in terms of strength, while 18 percent believed Sir Keir to understand ordinary people against the Prime Minister’s nine.

Mr Johnson’s own popularity, and indeed the Tory party, have slipped due to the allegations that Covid rules were broken in Whitehall and No10 last year.

Four alleged parties are now being investigated by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

Ms Gray was drafted in to lead the investigation after a quiz was held at the Cabinet Office on December 17, 2020.

Simon Case, Cabinet Secretary, later removed himself from the inquiry following the report of the virtual quiz.

Ms Gray will now investigate four parties: an alleged gathering in Downing Street on November 27, a Downing Street quiz on December 15 and a party on December 18, and a gathering at the Department for Education on December 10.

On December 14, Conservative Party headquarters admitted a gathering had taken place in Westminster.

The gathering had been organised by members of London mayoral candidate, Shaun Bailey’s team.

Two staff members who attended the event, have since been reprimanded by the party.

Mr Bailey has also stepped down as chair of the London Assembly police and crime committee.

The Department of Transport has also apologised after confirming a party took place in its offices on December 16.

Due to these alleged parties, Mr Johnson’s approval rating has fallen in the polls.

Although Mr Johnson has insisted he did not break any rules, in a poll, tracking who would be a better Prime Minister, he has fallen eight points to 31 percent.

Sir Keir, on the other hand, has risen by three points to 33, the poll from Savanta ComRes states.

In YouGov’s own voting intention tracker, Labour now stands at 37 percent in the polls.

In the poll released on December 16, the Tories now stand at 32 percent.

Savanta ComRes’ voting intention tracker was published on December 22 and was conducted between December 17-19 – the previous tracker was conducted between November 19-21.
