Boris Johnson makes huge appointment to team as he bids to get leadership bid on track
The former Mayor of London has enlisted the help as support for his bid suffered from a weekend of scandal, with his personal life thrust firmly into the limelight. Police were called to his girlfriend’s home amid concerns for her and his welfare after a heated discussion. But now he has opted to hire former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith to his election campaign.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the appointment was made after Mr Johnson was asked 26 times during a radio interview to clear up allegations surrounding his private life.
In interviews since the police call emerged over the weekend, Mr Johnson has been continually asked questions about the incident involving partner Carrie Symonds.
He was also asked about alleged “staged” photographs of himself and Ms Symonds which appeared across media outlets on Tuesday.
Mr Duncan Smith will take on the role of campaign chairman.
The ex-Foreign Secretary also gave Mark Fullbrook, business partner of election strategist Sir Lynton Crosby, the position of chief executive.
The move comes amid falling approval ratings, with Tory supporters considering to back leadership rival Jeremy Hunt.
Within hours of Mr Duncan Smith’s appointment, Mr Johnson wrote a letter to Mr Hunt challenging him to ensure the UK will leave the EU by October 31.
The letter said: “We must not kick the can down the road again.
“The British people have had enough of being left in limbo.
“For my part, I have been clear that, if I am elected leader, we will leave on October 31 with or without a deal.
“Will you join me in this commitment to leave on October 31 come what may?”
Mr Hunt responded by taking aim at Mr Johnson’s refusal to take part in a Sky TV debate on Monday night.
