Boris Johnson: How Prince William link left Tory leadership favourite red-faced
Boris Johnson is in the driving seat to become the next Prime Minister ahead of Jeremy Hunt, as the pair battle it out in a series of Conservative Party hustings. The Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP studied at Eton College – an independent boarding school and sixth form, which has produced 19 Prime Ministers including David Cameron. The boys-only establishment is also a favourite among the Royal Family, with Old Etonians including Prince Harry and Prince William.
However, the latter was also invited into a glamorous high-status society during his time there, comprising of the most popular, well-regarded and confident senior boys.
During a guest appearance on a 1999 BBC “Have I Got News For You,” show, viewers found out Mr Johnson was also a member.
Former presenter Angus Deayton tasked Mr Johnson and his team member Ian Hislop with finding out one thing Douglas Hurd, Prince William and Boris Johnson had in common – that also separated them from fictional character James Bond.
Mr Hislop stated: “James Bond has got a licence to kill and he’s an old Etonian – they are all old Etonians except him [Mr Hurd].
Oh no, oh no, oh no
Boris Johnson
“[Boris] were you in Pop?”
Before Boris unwillingly said: “Yes I was in Pop.”
Mr Hislop quickly made the connection and fired back: “[Prince] William was in Pop too, which is a prefect society, an elite society that votes each other in.
“Boris obviously was, Bond wasn’t and Hurd was.”
Mr Deayton informed the pair: “That’s the right answer,” before Boris quickly added: “Oh no, oh no, oh no.”
Mr Deayton joked: “The Daily Mail recently reflected on the careers of all the Poppers in 1982 to show how many of them like Earl Spencer had gone on to become the leading lights of their generation.
“While others for some reason had sunk without trace.”
Mr Johnson was left embarrassed as the rest of the panel joined in with berating him.
Officially known as the “Eton Society”, Pop is the oldest self-electing society of the school.
Members of Pop wear white and black houndstooth-checked trousers, a starched stick-up collar and white bow-tie, and are entitled to wear flamboyant waistcoats, often of their own design.
Historically, only members of Pop were entitled to furl their umbrellas or sit on the wall on the Long Walk, in front of the main building.
However, this tradition has apparently died out.
They perform roles at many of the routine events of the school year, including school plays, parents’ evenings and other official events, and generally maintain order.
Despite the jibes of the team on the show, Mr Johnson is now the favourite to become the next Prime Minister with Betfair offering odds of 2/9 on the former Mayor of London.
However, those numbers are lengthening after a weekend of controversy, which the 55-year-old has failed to address.
On Friday, police were called to his home in Camberwell, London, after reports from neighbours of a loud altercation taking place with his girlfriend Carrie Symonds.
Mr Johnson has failed to answer questions over the incident and Sky News was forced to cancel a head-to-head debate scheduled for tonight due to his decision not to attend.
