Boris Johnson hospital update: How PM ‘demanded to watch Lord of the Rings’ in virus fight

The Prime Minister was admitted to hospital last Sunday after self-isolating with coronavirus for over a week. On Monday he was moved to intensive care after his condition deteriorated, though he was released on Thursday.

According to a report in The Sun Mr Johnson watched films including the Lord of the Rings series and comedy Withnail And I whilst he battled the infection, though not whilst he was in intensive care.

Downing Street staff are said to have loaded the movies onto an iPad for the Prime Minister.

They reportedly also added Love Actually, Home Alone and Groundhog Day.

Speaking to The Sun a Number 10 source said: “It’s a good time to fill in some of his cultural gaps.

“It might seem odd but he has never seen Home Alone. He prefers Greek poetry doesn’t he?”

Mr Johnson is also said to have been completing sudoku puzzles.

On Friday the UK reported another 980 coronavirus deaths in hospital.

This is the highest 24-hour total yet recorded, and above the peaks reported by both Italy and Spain.

Authorities are urging people to respect the lockdown rules during the Bank Holiday weekend in order to save lives.

According to The Sun Mr Johnson and Carrie Symonds, his pregnant fiancé, have not met for nearly a month.

The paper reports Ms Symonds has been writing to her fiancé, and sending him scans of their unborn child, every day to keep up his moral.

Speaking to the paper a source said: “It’s been a very, very worrying time for Carrie.

The Prime Minister and his fiancé physically separated following NHS advice that being pregnant Ms Symonds is in a high-risk group.

Ms Symonds is also reported to have been suffering from coronavirus like symptoms.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman said: “The Prime Minister is back on a ward and continuing his recovery, which is at an early stage.

“Mr Johnson continues to be in very good spirits.

“As the PM was being taken back to the ward from ICU he was waving to the staff and hopefully it was clear to them he was saving his gratitude.”

The Prime Minister has received thousands of ‘get well soon’ cards and letters from members of the public.

On Friday Jonathan Van-Tam, England’s deputy chief medical officer, warned it was “impossible to say” cases have peaked.

The total number of coronavirus deaths worldwide has now exceeded 100,000.

Britain’s first death from the infection was recorded on March 5.
