Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to give another update tomorrow, with Monday’s announcement understood to be a significant one. Mr Johnson is preparing to speak about his “roadmap” out of lockdown and lay out the next steps for the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The vaccination programme in the UK is going well with the Government on track to vaccinate all of the top priority groups in the coming months. So far, millions of doses have been given to the most vulnerable.

What time is Boris Johnson speaking?

The Prime Minister will reveal his plan for easing lockdown restrictions on Monday, February 22.

The announcement is expected to take place some time in the morning.

After this, Mr Johnson will address MPs in the House of Commons shortly after 3pm.

Four hours later, around 7pm, the Prime Minister will reiterate what he said to the nation in a televised press conference from Downing Street.

What will he say?

Mr Johnson and the Government have tried very hard to keep details of the roadmap under wraps.

According to The Telegraph, the roadmap will be divided into at least four “steps” or phases, spaced roughly one month apart and running until at least the end of June.

A number of measures have already been signed off and given the OK to start easing.

This includes the reopening of schools, a limited resumption of care home visits indoors, socialising with one other person outdoors and the later mixing of two households in parks and outdoor settings.

Following a week of intense speculation, Downing Street sources have said the blueprint will not be finalised until Sunday at the very earliest.

Mr Johnson said his roadmap would include dates “if we possibly can”.

But he explained they will likely be provisional dates “by which we hope we can do something at the earliest”.

Mr Johnson’s comments follow huge demands from Conservative backbenchers for clarity in the ongoing situation.

The Prime Minister said the plans would be “cautious but irreversible”.

However, he stressed Covid rates in the UK would need to be “really, really low” before restrictions can start being eased.

Lockdown is unlikely to be relaxed until daily coronavirus cases reach the hundreds, compared with more than 10,000 a day now, according to reports.

Insiders have stressed that as part of the “cautious approach” to reopening society, enough time is needed between each easing to properly assess the impact on infection rates.

Whether this could be the last lockdown is still yet to be seen.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Government “absolutely” wanted this current shutdown to be the last one, but still can’t make any guarantees.

From March 8, schools are expected to fully reopen despite widespread discontent from the country’s teaching unions, who have called for a staggered return.

While schools argue the ask to test all students when they first go back makes the timeframe difficult, a Government source said: “The ambition has always been to make sure all kids go back at the same time.”
