Former MEP for East of England June Mummery has claimed the UK Government has handed over the UK’s fishing territories to the European Union during the negotiations over the post-Brexit trade agreement. Ms Mummery said: “We surrendered the UK’s most sustainable, renewable resource which is owned by each and every one of us as a public asset. So we handed that over but what did we actually get for that?

“They are stopping shellfish from going over the border and people are saying ‘well hang on a minute the other countries cannot do it’ but did those other countries hand over one of their most valuable resources?

“No, they did not but we did.”

Reacting to Ms Mummery’s comments one furious Express.co.uk reader reacted to the news and said: “Boris gave them our fish and the EU gave us a blockade of our exports to the EU and NI.”

Four months on from the UK’s official exit from the EU and amid ongoing trade negotiations, figures in the fishing industry claim Mr Johnson is selling out fishermen for a deal covering a broad range of other UK sectors.

One Express.co.uk reacted to this news and said: “Don’t want to rub it in, but I did say Boris would betray voters.”

Another reader echoed this view and said: “From looking like the knight coming to the rescue of Great Britain’s dream, Boris Johnson is looking and acting more and more as Great Britain’s dullard of the century.”

Another furious reader said: “His promise has turned into total disappointment.”

The details of Mr Johnson’s negotiations with the EU on fishing rights have seen a five-and-a-half year adjustment period were EU fishing is gradually stepped down, with the UK’s fleet eventually moving in as a replacement.

It has been estimated that the value of catch British fishermen can take from the UK’s Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) will increase by about 25 percent during this five year period.

So, by the end of the five year transition period approximately £140 million worth of fish will be handed back to the UK fishing industry.

However, many fishermen have refused to believe in Mr Johnson’s pledge that the deal will lead to “quite prodigious quantities of extra fish” becoming available.

Their views have been voiced by former MEP Ms Mummery who tweeted: “A Coastal Community party is needed.

“Our precious seaside towns and villages have been exploited.

“Fishing could be rebuilt so many deprived communities creating 1000’s of jobs.”
