Boris challenges Hunt to commit to Brexit deadline 'deal or no deal' on Twitter
Boris Johnson has challenged fellow leadership contender Jeremy Hunt to provide ‘clarity’ on when he believes the UK should leave the EU.
Mr Johnson wrote a letter today to ask the foreign secretary to join him in the commitment to leave the EU on October 31, deal or no deal.
He wrote: ‘For my part, I have been clear, that if elected leader, we will leave on 31 October with or without a deal.
‘Will you join me in this commitment to leave on 31 October, come what may?
‘If you will not, voters deserve to know what alternative deadline you will set.
‘What would you consider to be an acceptable delay?’
Mr Johnson added that the central question in the leadership contest is whether the next prime minister agrees to honour the referendum result and commits to leaving the EU on 31 October.
He says, ‘if we fail to deliver once again, the consequences for our party and country will be devastating.’
Mr Johnson also asks Mr Hunt: ‘What would you consider to be an acceptable delay? Would it be the end of this year, or will you extend our EU membership into 2020?
‘At what point will you decide enough is enough’.
Mr Hunt has hit back and tweeted in response: ‘Hi Boris, it’s good to talk. But no need for snail-mail, why not turn up to Sky tonight and I’ll give you full and frank answers? #BoJoNoShow.’
Boris also went on a ‘walkabout’ visit to Surrey as part of his leadership campaign, posing for photos during a brief stop at the Munch and Wiggles cafe in Oxshott.
The front-runner to become Britain’s next prime minister also flatly refused to comment on a photograph of him with girlfriend Carrie Symonds, which was published in the media after police were called to an incident at her home.
Following a reported row with Ms Symonds, he refused to say whether his campaign team passed a photograph of him and his partner to newspapers as part of a PR strategy.
Speaking to LBC, Johnson refused at least half a dozen times to comment on the photo of himself and Carrie Symonds seemingly sitting in the garden of a pub.
