Boris 'called Carrie Symonds the moment he was given his phone back'

Boris Johnson contacted his pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds ‘as soon as doctors handed his phones back’ after leaving intensive care on Thursday.

The prime minister, 55, also sent a message of thanks to the NHS for the ‘brilliant care’ staff had given him after he was moved from the ICU to a general ward at St Thomas’ Hospital yesterday.

Senior Tory allies and aides in No10 were said to be relieved at the news last night, with one reportedly admitting they had all been ‘feeling pretty sick with worry’.

Downing Street said the Conservative politician was in ‘extremely good spirits’ and doctors were closely monitoring him during the ‘early phase’ of his recovery from a severe case of coronavirus.

After being discharged, he is said to have wasted no time calling Ms Symonds, 32, who he hasn’t seen for almost three weeks now.

The Tory leader was well enough to make quick calls to his partner and the rest of his family after doctors handed his two phones back, according to The Sun.

Mr Johnson’s official spokesman also passed on a message from him to mark the third ‘Clap for Carers’.

He said: ‘The Prime Minister thanks the NHS for the brilliant care which it is providing.

‘The claps for carers have provided wonderful, unifying moments for the entire country.

‘I’m sure that tonight we will once again see people in their millions paying tribute to our fantastic dedicated care workers.’

Last night, Ms Symonds, a senior advisor to ocean conservation charity Oceana, showed her appreciation for the NHS by tweeting a string of clapping emojis.

Mr Johnson first fell ill on March 27, while his partner announced she had spent a week in bed with coronavirus symptoms last Saturday.

She wrote on Twitter: ‘I’ve spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of Coronavirus. I haven’t needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend.

‘Being pregnant with Covid-19 is obviously worrying. To other pregnant women, please do read and follow the most up to date guidance which I found to be v reassuring.’

The government launched a campaign yesterday to convince the UK to stay at home during the hot weather over Easter weekend as the Covid-19 outbreak continues.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who has been deputising for the PM, warned that it was still too soon for ministers to begin lifting the social distancing rules introduced last month.

He said: ‘After all the sacrifices so many people have made, let’s not ruin it now.

‘We mustn’t give the coronavirus a second chance to kill more people and hurt our country.’
