The Royal Family’s 2021 has been like no other. In February it was left shocked after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they would not be returning as working members of the family. Not a month later the pair blindsided The Firm again following their bombshell interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
This month, Prince Philip sadly passed away aged 99, while the Queen later marked her 95th birthday, and Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge saw their ten-year wedding anniversary.
This all came after Meghan and Harry aimed several allegations at the family, including on racism and mental health.
Soon, UK politicians waded into the debate, most notably Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer who demanded the Palace open an investigation into the racism claims.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson declined to comment, insisting that he had “always had the highest admiration for the Queen and the unifying role that she plays in our country and across the Commonwealth”.
But before entering Downing Street, Mr Johnson had spoken about the royals.
In 2015, while London Mayor speaking on his LBC Radio talk show, he suggested that the US’ fascination with the Royal Family revealed a hidden wish to be “in a single commonwealth” while “united under Her Majesty”.
The tongue-in-cheek comment came during a visit to the US.
Callers to his radio show, on this instance held in New York City, kept asking him questions about the monarchy.
JUST IN: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have ‘bitter pill’ to swallow
Of the theme of questions, Mr Johnson said: “What does this show you?
“Deep down, in a primal way, they regret the fundamental schism of 1776 and they wish that we were in a single commonwealth of English-speaking peoples again united under Her Majesty.
“That’s what they secretly want.
“They have been deprived of it too long, that blissful pride that goes with a hereditary monarchy.”
Mr Johnson was also asked when he had last spoken to Her Majesty.

Another caller quizzed on what sandwiches were eaten at Buckingham Palace, and the names of the Queen’s pet corgis.
He struggled to answer many of the questions.
In response to the sandwich query, Mr Johnson replied: “I don’t know. Ham from Bucking?”
On the names of the corgis, he said: “I haven’t got the faintest idea what they are called. Basil? Eric?”
More interestingly, he said how the Queen had asked if her cameo appearance with Daniel Craig as James Bond at the London 2012 Olympic Games had gone down well with the public.
He said: “She very innocently wanted to know whether people thought it was funny and I said it was brilliant.”
Mr Johnson’s comments on the US’ obsession with the Royal Family have not aged well.
Following Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview, a split of opinion opened between the US and UK.
While many Americans sided with Meghan and Harry, those in the UK largely supported the Queen.
NBC News noted: “The reactions to the interview have revealed another divide: distinct cultural sensibilities on both sides of the Atlantic.”
