‘Body swerve!’ – Sadiq Khan mocked as he flips question on Corbyn’s leadership onto Brexit
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, joined Sky News presenter Kay Burley to discuss knife crime, Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and a much-anticipated general election. However, Mr Khan was mocked for making a “body swerve” away from answering a question about the leader of the Labour Party. Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson refused to back a plan to install Mr Corbyn as temporary Prime Minister should a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson succeed.
This statement, along with others in the Remain alliance agreeing, brought into question Mr Corbyn’s leadership ability, especially with a possible general election coming up.
When asked about his leader, Mr Khan said: “The important thing is to resolve the issue of Brexit.”
Ms Burley appeared shocked by the dodge and called it a “body swerve”.
The London Mayor said: “I think the important thing is not simply that Jeremy Corbyn leads us into a general election but to resolve Brexit and then allow Jeremy Corbyn and our party to go into an election showing the British public some of our policies on the NHS, on policing, on young people, on the environment.”
He continued: “My concern is if we haven’t resolved the issue of Brexit then that will be the number one issue and people will use it as a proxy for their views on remain or Brexit, rather than a really exciting offer from Jeremy Corbyn and the next Labour government.”
Mr Khan also defended his party leader by saying that he would be a “good” Prime Minister.
He added: “I think the offer that we’ve got to the British public is great: investing in the NHS, making sure that those with the broadest shoulders carry the greatest of burdens in relation to taxation, investing in young people, reversing the cuts that the government has made in policing, protecting the environment at the time and place of a climate emergency.
“My worry is if we leave the European Union without a deal, it would be catastrophic for our country but also for people’s lives and livelihoods.”
Sky News carried out a poll about trust in MPs to make the right decisions on Brexit.
Boris Johnson is trusted by around a third of the public – 32 percent – to make the right calls on Brexit, but that rises to two-thirds (64 percent) of Conservative voters.
Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is trusted by just 16 percent of the public on the issue, compared with 76 percent who do not trust him.

Mr Khan dismissed the results, saying that “polls go up and down”.
He continued: “The key thing for me is to resolve Brexit, have the general election then put to the British public the offer from Jeremy Corbyn and Labour versus what the Conservatives are offering.”
Mr Corbyn and his Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, appeared to differ on whether a referendum should come first or a general election.
When asked who he sided with, Mr Khan said: “I side with London which is have a referendum before a general election.
“We need to resolve that issue, the most important issue that my generation’s faced. Resolve that, accept the vote of the British public, now we know the best deal the government can do with the EU, a million miles away from what was promised in 2016.”
