Body language expert gives her verdict on Matt Hancock's 'crocodile tears'

The health secretary broke down watching the world’s first patients receive the coronavirus vaccine today – but not everyone was convinced it was genuine.

Matt Hancock was emotional after Margaret Keenan, 90, became the first person in the world to receive Pfizer/BioNTech’s jab in Coventry this morning, followed by 81-year-old William Shakespeare.

The Cabinet minister appeared to wipe away a tear as he told Good Morning Britain that the UK’s vaccine rollout was a ‘way out’ of the pandemic, adding that it has been a ‘tough year for so many’.

Metro.co.uk asked body language expert Judi James to give an analysis on the health secretary’s interview, after many took to social media accusing him of shedding ‘crocodile tears’.

Ms James said Mr Hancock did not appear to show some of the tell-tale symptoms of crying, such as watery eyes or scrunching his face.

‘It was not a particularly convincing display but he’s earned his moment of emotion so we probably should give him the benefit of the doubt,’ she said.

‘Perhaps he had been sobbing with joy privately and wanted to give the public a taster of how he was feeling behind the scenes.’

The expert said ‘genuine crying’ normally involves three symptoms – the voice ‘breaks’ or the vocal tone changes often getting higher and facial muscles contract, leading to ‘facial crumping’ especially around the chin.

Thirdly, the eyes redden and can create actual tears ranging from the type that run down the face accompanied with snot, or the ‘type that we control to the point where they just avoid spilling over the lower eyelid’.
