Police confirm four bodies were found in search for missing teens

The bodies of four boys who dissapeared on a camping trip have been found days after a huge search began.

It was launched after Jevon Hirst, Harvey Owen, Wilf Henderson and Hugo Morris never returned home on Monday morning. They were thought to be travelling in the Harlech and Porthmadog areas of Gwynedd in North Wales.

It is believed they had gone camping in the Snowdonia area, and were last seen in a silver Ford Fiesta, registration HY14 GVO.

North Wales Police said in a statement: “Four bodies have been recovered from a car which appears to have left the road in Garreg, near Tremadog, said North Wales Police.”

The force confirmed on Tuesday (November 21) they had managed to find the vehicle “following information from a member of the public”. Locals reported seeing a forensics van heading into a cordoned off area earlier this afternoon.

Speaking to the BBC earlier today Gareth Pritchard, a former deputy chief constable of North Wales Police, said finding the boys would have been the biggest challenge for the emergency services.

The car appears to have left the road on the A4085 at Garreg, near Tremadog, in a remote part of the national park. North Wales Police said the car was found on its roof and partially submerged in water.

The boys’ families have been informed of their loved ones’ deaths, the force said.

Supt Owain Llewelyn, of North Wales Police, said: “At present, this appears to have been a tragic accident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the four young men at this very difficult time.

“This has been an extensive search involving a number of different agencies and volunteers, and this is sadly not the outcome that any of us would have wanted.

“We would ask that the family be afforded the appropriate privacy and respect.”

North Wales Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

News of the tragedy comes after the boys’ families made frantic appeals for help to find them.

Harvey’s mother, Crystal Owen, said she didn’t know they were going on a camping trip and thought they were going to stay at a friend’s grandfather’s house.

She told the BBC earlier on Tuesday: “I am frantically worried. We haven’t slept a wink. We are desperate to chase any lead we can.

“If I’d have known (where he was going) I wouldn’t have let him due to the winter weather conditions.”

All four of the boys had been studying A-levels at Shrewsbury College, which earlier said the thoughts and prayers of staff and students were with the families.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said the service was called on Tuesday at about 10.08am to reports of an incident near the A4085 between Nantmor and Tan-Lan.

He added: “We sent an operations manager, two emergency ambulances and two Cymru high acuity response units to the scene where we were supported by the emergency medical retrieval and transfer service in two Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters.”
