On completing his A-levels, the Duke of Cambridge began life as an undergraduate at St Andrews University in 2001. By doing so, he broke a 150-year tradition in the Royal Family, where members often went to either Oxford and Cambridge university. He started by studying Art History, before switching to Geography and would go on to graduate with a Scottish Master of Arts in 2005.

By all accounts, William wanted to blend in with the crowd and was keen not to draw attention to his royal status.

So he reportedly decided to go by the name of “Steve” in an effort to conceal his blue blood heritage.

It was while studying at St. Andrews that William and Kate became romantically linked.

However, the couple were brought together by fate many years before, while both were at school.

At the time, William was a pupil at Ludgrove school, while Kate went to St Andrew’s prep.

In her book ‘Kate: The Future Queen’, Katie Nicholl describes the moment when the two future lovers first set eyes on one another.

She writes: “Although she wasn’t especially interested in boys, the arrival of one particular young man had caught her attention.

“Nearby Ludgrove Prep school would often play matches against St. Andrew’s Prep, and there was much excitement when Prince William, a left back on Ludgrove’s Colts team, came to St. Andrew’s to play a hockey match when he was nine years old.

“William, like Kate, loved sports and was one of the best hockey and rugby players in his year.

“Of course, the arrival of the prince generated a flurry of excitement.”

Kate admitted in their 2010 engagement interview, that it took a while for the two to meet and become friends.

The flames of passion were finally lit after William attended a charity student fashion show in 2002, where Kate was one of the models.
