Edward Jackson’s relatives found his snaps when they went through his effects after he died aged 72 in November. In a spare room he had used as a darkroom they saw hundreds of photos of the world’s most famous family. They show the Queen smiling with Philip by her side as they enjoy time out at Sandringham House in Norfolk and the more discreet properties surrounding it. The Queen went back to the 20,000- acre estate by helicopter from Windsor Castle on Sunday.
She had hoped to move to the bolthole in the run-up to Christmas and stay until mid-February. But the rapid spread of Omicron forced her to stay in Berkshire. She is now expected to remain at Sandringham’s Wood Farm for a few weeks. It is where she and Philip enjoyed many happy times together and he spent much of his retirement.
Edward, a retired newsagent from King’s Lynn, took thousands of photos of the Royal Family, with gems being snaps of the Queen Mother, Princess Diana and Prince Charles. He also captured the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 while working in London. Edward’s family are now hoping his archive will find a wider audience during her Platinum Jublilee.
They are giving some of the shots to Historic Royal Palaces, which is planning an exhibition at Kensington Palace to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. The charity, which manages some of the UK’s palaces, has appealed for the public to send in their pictures of the Queen for display.
Edward’s nephew Stephen Jackson, 46, said: “If he was still here he definitely would have sent some in. He always had two cameras hanging around his neck, just in case one went wrong.”
