Mr Floyd was reportedly suffocated after a Minneapolis police officer pinned the victim’s neck down with his knee. Protests over the death have become violent in 30 US cities on Friday night.

According to the Daily Mail, buses and cars along Rye Lane in Peckham, London, were forced to stop on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters emerged onto the main road.

Saturday’s protests are said to be a forerunner to more demonstrations planned for the upcoming week across the UK.

Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow are all set to protest the death of George Floyd.

Video footage of the protests posted on social media show the crowds shouting “no justice, no peace” as they occupied the street.

Another video shows protestors shouting “the UK is not innocent”.

Although many demonstrators reportedly held placards that read ‘Black Lives Matter’ the UK BLM group say they are not affiliated with the London protests.

In a statement posted on twitter, the UK BLM group said: “We stand in solidarity with all those whose hearts feel broken from the news of the killing of George Floyd.”

They added: “We have no affiliation with the London BLM group and any of the BLM London accounts.

“We are currently discussing the implications of calling a mass march in the middle of a pandemic that is killing us the most.

“Solidarity with our family and siblings across the globe.”

On Sunday, the protesters plan to decent onto Trafalgar Square in central London.

A banner from Saturday’s demonstrations reportedly read: “We are doing this to place pressure in the American government and show that this is a worldwide issue.”

A demonstration in front of the US embassy in London is said to be planned to protest Mr Floyd’s death.

Placards at the protests did reportedly remind attendees to wear face masks and maintain social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Floyd’s death came soon after Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old unarmed black man who was shot to death by two white men in Georgia, America, earlier in May.

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old back woman was also fatally shot by police in Louisville, America, in March.

The white Minneapolis policeman, Derek Chauvin, was filmed kneeling on George Floyd’s neck until he passed out and later died.

Mr Chauvin lost his job and has been arrested and charged with murder.

Hennepin County Prosecutor, Mike Freeman, said that Mr Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

On Friday night, the anger of protesters in Minneapolis was seen in other cities across America as National Guard units were called into Atlanta and put on standby in Washington DC.

Two people have reportedly been fatally shot in separate incidents in California and Detroit.

Police and Secret Service agents were seen to be protecting the White House as demonstrators gathered in Washington DC.
