Bitcoin man offers council over £55million to dig up rubbish tip to retrieve computer

James Howells, 35, was clearing out his office in 2013 when he threw away the hard drive along with a broken laptop, old keyboards and mice. He said: “I had two identical hard drives and I threw out the wrong one. I have to laugh because what else can I do?”

The hard-drive contained 7,500 bitcoins, which he bought for almost nothing in 2009. Since then their value has rocketed, and James is offering Newport council in South Wales a quarter of his loot if they help him dig up the landfill where it was buried.

James thinks council records will help him find the grid reference number of the site where his rubbish lies.

The council said: “The cost of digging up the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds without any guarantee of finding it or it still being in working order.
