At Buckingham Palace, Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral, undaunted wellwishers in raincoats huddled under umbrellas as they added blooms and cards to the piles. Lisa Moss had travelled from Oxford to Windsor on her 45th birthday with daughter Bethan.

She said: “I walked through the gates and could feel myself getting emotional, looking at all the floral tributes.

“It has been lovely to come and see so many people.”

Bethan, 21, has just graduated from the University of Nottingham where she studied History.

She said: “This has been so poignant and important for the Royal Family, for them to know that so many people still support them.

“You can’t really imagine a Great Britain without them.”

Kirsty Rozzier was visiting on her 34th birthday with husband Ian and son Eli.

She said they had explained to three-year-old Eli that the Queen was “a bit poorly” when news of her declining health broke on Thursday.

Asked where the Queen was now, little Eli said: “The stars.”

Ian added of the weather: “A bit of drizzle hasn’t put anybody off – everybody’s going about it in a very English way, just carrying on.”

Catherine Taylor, 50, took daughter Alex, 17, and their dogs Woody and Forest, with her to Windsor.

She said: “It’s lovely that all ages, all variety and manner of people have turned out to pay their respects.” Maggie

Coles, 76, who was visiting from Shepperton in Surrey, said the nation sharing its love for the late monarch had been “quite overwhelming.

“It’s absolutely wonderful to see”.
