Residents in Newtown, Birmingham, have been left rocked after shots were fired from a dark coloured car at around 8pm on Wednesday. Officers with dogs remain on the inner city estate today as they continue to investigate the chilling disturbance.

Police say said someone was injured – but they have so far been unable to locate them, Birmingham Live reports.

A West Midlands Police statement read: “We’re investigating a shooting that happened in Birmingham last night (22 September).

“Shots were fired from a dark coloured car on Westhorpe Grove just before 7.30pm.

“We believe that someone was injured, but so far haven’t been able to find them. Reports suggest they ran off in the direction of Mosborough Crescent and were picked up in a car.

“Local hospitals have been alerted and we’re doing everything we can to locate the victim and everyone else involved.

“Detectives and forensic scene investigators are carrying out enquiries in Mosborough Crescent, Westhorpe Grove and Great King Street this morning (Thursday).

“CCTV is being reviewed as we try to piece together exactly what happened.”

Community leader Bishop Desmond Jaddoo said: “I have received reports of an incident around Mosborough Crescent which is of concern to the local community.”

The shooting happened in an area West Midlands Police have recently targeted to tackle knife and gun crime.

The force has this month seized submachine guns and rifles from inner city streets, including those in Newtown and neighbouring Lozells, which is just northwest of central Birmingham.

These weapons are associated with video games like Grand Theft Auto and Call Of Duty, which are popular with youths.

Photographs taken today show officers carrying out door-to-door enquiries, with the community worried about the disturbance.

A West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called at 7.59pm on Wednesday by police to reports of a shooting.

“A paramedic officer was sent to the police station on Bridge Street West.

“After liaising with police, we were stood down from the scene.”

West Midlands Police have been contacted for comment.

The investigation continues.
