The young girl, believed to be three years old, was hit on a zebra crossing outside the school on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place just before 2.40pm near the Olive School in Birmingham. A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Emergency services found the girl with her family on Reddings Lane.
The little girl was later taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital but died shortly afterwards.
A section of the street remains cordoned off after the incident.
A child’s scooter has also been seen near the crossing following the tragic incident.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “It is understood the girl was using a zebra crossing when she was hit by a silver Ford Galaxy just before 2.40pm today.
“The driver of the car failed to stop at the crossing but officers swiftly took witness accounts and statements, and arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after locating his vehicle in the area.
“The girl’s family were with her at the time of the tragedy.”
Acting Inspector Paul Hughes, from West Midlands Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said: “The tragic death of such a young child is deeply saddening. Our thoughts are with the girl’s family at this incredibly distressing time.

“Our priority is supporting her family and ensuring that a thorough investigation is carried out.
“We understand the shock and worry this may have caused the community and ask people not to speculate on the circumstances.
“I’m keen to hear from anyone who was on Reddings Lane or the immediate vicinity and may have witnessed the collision or heard anything that may assist our investigation.

A spokesman for West Midland Ambulance Service confirmed: “We were called at 2.38pm this afternoon to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian.
“We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands air ambulance critical care car, and the Midlands air ambulance from Cosford.
“On arrival, we discovered one patient, which was a child.
“They were treated for serious injuries and taken to Birmingham children’s hospital by land ambulance.”
