A billionaire’s son, who fled to the Middle East just hours after the death of a student 15 years ago, has admitted he was involved. Martine Vik Magnussen’s body was discovered under rubble in the basement of a property in Great Portland Street, London, in 2008.

Farouk Abdulhak has been on the Met Police’s most wanted list since he fled to Yemen and is also the subject of an international arrest warrant.

He had never spoken about the case before but now says the 23-year-old died as a result of a “sex accident gone wrong”.

Speaking to the BBC he said: “I did something when I was younger it was a mistake. I told you my real name, I can’t specifically go to the UK for something that happened there.

“The only reason I am scared is you told me you’re a writer and journalist. You’re the last person I should talk to.”

In a later conversation he told the journalist: “I don’t know what happened it’s all a blur.

“I have flashbacks every once in a while. If I smell a certain female perfume I feel uncomfortable.”

But he said he would be unlikely to come back to the UK to face the consequences of the student’s death.

He added: “It was just an accident. Nothing nefarious.

“Just a sex accident gone wrong.”

Ms Vik Magnussen’s friends Nina Brantzeg and Cecilie Dahl were with her in Maddox nightclub the night she died.

According to Ms Dahl she had met Mr Abdulhak with Martine before and described them as friends.

But, on the night Ms Vik Magnussen died, she says that Mr Abdulhak seemed different and got upset when one of them took a photo of him with her.

Another friend, Thale Lassen, believes that Mr Abdulhak had once tried to kiss Ms Vik Magnussen and she had told him that she wasn’t interested.

CCTV shows Ms Vik Magnussen linking arms with Mr Abdulhak as they left the nightclub. Her friends said she would often stay at his flat because it was so central.

Her friends reported her missing when she didn’t come home the next day.

Then after someone noticed Mr Abdulhak had deleted his Facebook account the police searched his flat and found her semi-naked body in the basement of his block.

By this time he had already left the UK, by getting a flight from London to Cairo.
