Bigamist who hid being pregnant from first husband told she faces long sentence
A bigamist mum who hid being pregnant from her first husband is facing seven years in prison.
Brinda Kantamanen, 42, lived a double life, keeping her second marriage and the child she had with Matthew Hall a secret from her husband Ravi.
Their homes were just three minutes apart and she even gave a false name on her child’s birth certificate.
She tied the knot with her first husband, Ravi, in North Carolina, US, in 1999, and enjoyed a traditional Indian ceremony the same year.
They went on to have two children before moving to London where Ravi works as a director for an international consultancy firm.
An earlier hearing heard cracks in their marriage began to show by 2017 when Ravi started suspecting his wife was being unfaithful as she was often away.
Whenever he tried to confront her, he said she would either ‘become affectionate or threaten suicide’.
In December 2017, Ravi made the devastating discovery that she had married Mr Hall two months earlier at Ealing Town Hall – just a short walk from their family home.
Their marriage was officially dissolved in 2019.
Kantamanen, from Guildford, Surrey, was accompanied by Mr Hall as she appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates Court yesterday, after pleading guilty to one count of bigamy.
She was told her case would be sent to crown court where a judge could jail her for up to seven years.
Kantamanen was released on unconditional bail after standing in the dock to confirm her identity to magistrates.
Magistrate Nigel Shock warned her: ‘Our sentencing powers wouldn’t be sufficient so it would need to be sent to the crown court.
‘This is going to go to the crown court for sentencing on a date to be fixed. We’re going to release you on unconditional bail.’
