Benn admits fatal flaw in plan to stop Brexit – has ‘no idea’ if public would back Remain
The Chairman of the Brexit Select Committee for Labour was insisting there should be a second referendum when he said he doesn’t know if people have changed their stance. Hilary Benn said polling indicates there is “a bit of a majority” for Remain but experts have said there hasn’t been much change. Polling expert Paula Surridge recently told Express.co.uk data shows 90 percent of voters would vote the same as they did in 2016.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Benn said: “Personally I think that choice should go back to the British people.
“If there is a deal then you can say that is actually what Brexit looks like, not what was promised.
“Those are the choices and trade-offs that the Government has had to make.
“On the other hand, there’s Remain. I have no idea whether the British people have changed their minds or not.
“Polling indicates there is a bit of a majority for Remain.”
Mr Boulton said: “Those people who voted for it would say normally, what we vote for happens and if it’s a mistake then we can review it.
“Wouldn’t that be a basic breakdown of trust between this place and the people if you say it’s not going to happen at all.”
Mr Benn added: “The only people who determine whether it wasn’t going to happen at all would be the British people themselves.
“That’s the point about the confirmatory referendum because you have the Prime Minister saying I’m prepared to contemplate a no deal Brexit.
“The Liberal Democrats saying we’ll just cancel the referendum result and revoke.
“The compromised position in British politics today is a real choice we have to make now, we know what a Brexit deal looks like.
“If the British people have changed their mind, and I don’t know whether they have, it would be really odd to leave if there’s no support for it today.”

Mr Benn’s comments come as Prime Minister Boris Johnson has insisted the UK will leave the EU on October 31 according to his “do or die” pledge.
But the Benn Act, also named the Surrender Bill, forces Mr Johnson to request a three-month extension from the EU if a deal isn’t made by October 18.
Mr Johnson has said he will not break the law but has ensured the UK will still leave by the end of the month.
It is not clear how he plans to go about this.
