There is a revolution in beer quality currently sweeping the world, led by craft brewers. And British brewers are leading the way. What’s more, you can enjoy these amazing beers at home. In 2019 59 percent of ale or lager drinkers knew what craft beer was and had drunk it – up from 24 percent in 2016.

And if you’re still part of the 41percent who don’t know an IPA from a Kettle-Sour, craft beer is easy to explain.

Simply, it is beer brewed by small, independent breweries, usually with bolder, hoppier – and sometimes very unusual flavours.

And the emphasis is always on flavour and quality.

It is usually served in smaller glasses or cans than ale and lager, often because it has a stronger ABV than traditional ales. And it is always made with the finest of ingredients, care, skill and knowledge.

A great British growth story

From 1,352 breweries operating in the UK in 2013, in 2017, as the craft beer revolution really began to take hold, there were 2,266.

Today, there are still 2,273 breweries operating in the UK – the vast majority, small independents.

Something for everyone

And these brewers are willing to experiment and innovate.

Beers with grapefruit? Tick. Ice cream flavoured beers? Yes really. Peanut butter stout? That’s out there. It’s all down to customer demand.

Delicious, refreshing craft-lagers are popular in the summer. Then as the nights draw in and the weather turns colder, dark, warming barrel-aged beers and stouts take over.

And if you fancy something in-between, there are earthy wheat beers, IPA’s or fruit beers.

Craft beers cater for all tastes. And the variety of flavours have proven popular with customers

Who are Innis & Gunn?

INNIS & GUNN are a leading Scottish Brewer, raising the reputation of Scottish beer the world over. In 2019 they were voted by drinkers in the UK as the most popular beer and cider brand.

Founded by Dougal Gunn Sharp, CEO and master brewer of Innis & Gunn.

A passion for beer was sparked by working holidays as a teenager at Edinburgh’s iconic Caledonian Brewery, founded by his father.

Following a pupillage at Timothy Taylors in Keighly, his interest in science and flavour came together when he experimented with ageing beer in whisky casks, discovering the rich flavour this imparted in the beer.

The brewer’s flagship Original barrel aged beer was born from this discovery, prompting Dougal to start Innis & Gunn to change the face of beer in the UK.

Since their launch in 2003 Innis & Gunn has led the craft beer movement and become one of the most awarded modern brewers of its time, a Scottish success story, enjoying 16 years of growth.

Their beers can be bought in over 30 countries and they have twice won the Queen’s Award for International Trade.

Keep an eye out for our in-paper beer tasting guides and special tasting videos with Dougal himself!
