Beautiful village from Harry Potter plagued by ‘arrogant’ littering tourists

Harry Potter fans the world over have visited this tiny UK village tucked away in a corner of Yorkshire, after it featured in one of the blockbuster films – but locals have dismayed at the arrogant tourists who are running amok in the village.

Villagers in Malham, North Yorkshire, are growing increasingly angry at the attitudes of those who are arriving for a nose around their area – as they’re causing parking mayhem and making it look litter-strewn.

Grandfather Brian Jackson, 87, who has lived there for 30 years, has said he gets abuse from inconsiderate drivers on a regular basis, reports TeessideLive.

Brian said: “It’s ridiculous, they just park everywhere.

“I’ve asked people to move and the reaction is not good.

“They say ‘What f****** right have you got to stop us parking here?’ I own it! I don’t know what they think.

“They swear at me all the time.”

And, he says, the litter is becoming intolerable.

He said: “If we don’t pick it up ourselves within a day or two, the place would be just horrible. Dog poo bags is the worst thing, why people put dog poo in a bag and then just leave it, I don’t know.

“It would go away more quickly if they didn’t wrap it up…but we don’t want dog foul. However, if I see someone pick dog poo up, I do say ‘Thank you very much, there’s a bin just up the road’.”

Malham Cove featured in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 when the main trio were on the run and hiding from Voldermort’s death-eaters.

It was also the location for the 1992 film of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights and has featured in Netflix’s The Witcher.

Brian’s neighbours Peter and Rita Layton, both 62, have also recounted a scary moment when they confronted a driver outside of their home.

They saw a man in his 70s parking on double yellow lines – but he wasn’t displaying a blue badge.

The man shouted: “Well, I am disabled! I can park anywhere I like! I don’t have to display it.”

Rita said: “He was not a very nice man at all.

“He was very nasty and very arrogant.

“I can’t say that he swore at us, but it was his whole attitude.

“He was threatening, he got right up in Peter’s face.”

The parish council has launched campaigns to deal with the parking and litter issues.

In a letter to all residents Kirkby Malhamdale Parish Council (KMPC) chairman Chris Wildman said: “Some five to six years ago now KMPC began a process of consultation with all residents about ways that it would be possible to improve the long-standing traffic and safety problems created for Malham village because of the huge numbers of visitors who come to this beautiful place in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

“The visitor numbers have certainly shown no signs of diminishing, and in fact over the past five plus years, and particularly post-Covid-19, the visitor numbers have increased significantly.”

There are now multiple litter picker stations encouraging residents and visitors to help tidy up.

As well as that there is an honesty box system for parking, where visitors are asked to drop as little as £2 into a milk float for the day.

More fields will be made accessible for parking and more double yellow lines introduced.
