The BBC’s political editor is known for her level-headed manner during her TV political coverage but tripped up when discussing the Royal Family. Speaking on the podcast Brexitcast, Kate came up in conversation as Ms Kuenssberg discussed who would sit next to her in the Royal Box at Wimbledon 2019. At the time, the Tory leadership race was down to the last two: Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

Ms Kuenssberg noted that they would both have to act as “quasi Prime Minister” until one of them was chosen to replace Theresa May.

She said: “Imagine if Johanna Konta gets to the final round of the Wimbledon ladies final.

“They will be begging for tickets in the Royal Box.

“Who is going to sit next to Kate Middleton?

“Oh my goodness, will it be Boris on one side and Jeremy on the other?”

Kate attends Wimbledon every year as she is the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a patronage she took over from the Queen in 2016.

The BBC’s Brussels foreign correspondent pointed out that Middleton is Kate’s maiden name and that her title is now the Duchess of Cambridge.

Ms Kuenssberg quickly apologised.

Kate has been the Duchess of Cambridge for nearly a decade now as her and Prince William’s 10-year wedding anniversary is next week.

The titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were bestowed on the pair of them by the Queen upon their marriage, as is tradition.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were likewise given titles upon their marriage in 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Kate, who appeared to act as a peacemaker between the brothers at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday, used to be very close with her brother-in-law Harry.

Harry described her as the sister he never had and the pair worked together on projects including Heads Together and The Royal Foundation, along with William.

However, they have sadly become split by a rift in recent years which started between Harry and William soon after Harry started dating Meghan.

The feud escalated when Harry and Meghan decided to step down as senior royals and start a new life in the US, with William believing his brother had blindsided and disrespected the Queen.

Last month, Harry braved the fury of his family by doing a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey along with his wife.

It was reported that the princes spoke once after the interview but it was “unproductive”.

However, after their grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, died aged 99, they seemed to put their differences aside and come together in a show of unity.

They spoke on the phone ahead of Saturday’s ceremony, and then finally face-to-face after the service in St George’s Chapel.

Harry was first seen speaking to Kate, who hung back and allowed William to join them, leading to a conversation between the three of them.

Since the funeral, it has emerged that Harry has spoken to William again, as well as his father Prince Charles.

Huw Edwards led the BBC’s coverage for the funeral on the weekend.
