BBC’s Katya Adler WARNS EU could let UK ‘walk away’ with no deal if October deadline met

BBC’s Katya Adler claimed the European Union have a “feeling that this is all going to go potentially nowhere up until October 31”. Since MPs returned from Easter holiday’s, no Brexit progress has been made, with talks between the Labour Party and the Government still in deadlock. Speaking on BBC’s Brexicast, Europe Editor, Ms Adler, said: “On the European side there is just the feeling that this is all going to go potentially nowhere up until October 31.

“They look at the UK and they see things still so divided, still so split, no apparent support for a second referendum, no clear vision that even if there were a general election that would be decisive and that is why they were beginning to think, well what do we do?

“‘Do we grant another extension? Do we not grant another extension?’

“I put a health warning on any headline at the moment because as we know, normally one day is a long time in politics, but it is still quite a few months until the end of October so it is too early to say.

“But, at this point, with enough distance away from October 31, there certainly are voices in the European Union who are saying ‘Macron does have a point’.

“‘If the UK can really never get around to agreeing something, then maybe we will just have to walk away and start talking on the other side’”.

The European Union granted the UK an extension to Article 50 until the end of October after Theresa May wrote for the bloc asking for a delay.

European Council President Donald Tusk warned the UK not to “please do not waste this time” after the extension was granted.

French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly wanted to make sure the UK had cut ties from the bloc before the European Parliamentary elections next month.

The UK will be forced to take part in the European elections if the Prime Minister does not get a Brexit deal through the Commons before the end of May.

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party have started announcing candidates running in the European elections, furious at the Government’s handling of the divorce process.

The former Ukip leader Mr Farage also claimed that he wants candidates to run for Parliament in the future to stop Remainer MPs blocking Brexit.

He said: “We want the European election to be the first step of a massive change that ‘resteps’ entirely British politics and actually makes it look more like the country.

“MPs will realise that if they carry on trying to stop Brexit, they’ll lose their seats at the next general election. I think they will be very fearful of what the Brexit Party can do to them.

“That’ll give them two choices – either they change and start to deliver Brexit, or we’ll replace them at that general election.

“It’s a springboard. If you show people you’re capable of winning in one set of elections, people will start to believe that it’s possible in a general election too.”
