BBC’s Katya Adler reveals EU’s true response to Boris Johnson’s pledges – ‘Scoffed at!’

Speaking on Brexitcast, the BBC editor claimed the EU is suffering “economically and politically” from the Brexit uncertainty but that they will continue to dismiss the Prime Minister’s claims negotiations with Brussels are proceeding smoothly. Dr Adler revealed EU negotiators are mocking the Prime Minister behind closed doors as he claims he will get a deal with the bloc by mid-October. She said: “All this uncertainty costs the EU economically and politically as well.

“That doesn’t mean they want to rush towards a no deal Brexit with Boris Johnson.

“They were openly dismissive of his claims that negotiations with the EU were going swimmingly.

“And when they heard him tonight saying ‘I’m going to go to Brussels, I’m going to get a new deal by mid-October’, privately that’s scoffed at.

“Because they think he does want a deal but they think it’s way, way, way down his priority list.

“And in the meantime, the EU is going to publish its no deal planning.

“And that’s really a message to say ‘yes, we want to avoid no deal but we feel prepared if we need to be, so bring it on!’”

MPs on Tuesday voted to take control of the parliamentary agenda in order to present the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) (No.6) which would bind Boris Johnson to request an extension of the Brexit deadline until January 2020 if the Prime Minister fails to deliver on a deal by October.

Mr Johnson lost the vote 328 to 301 after MP Philip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats ahead of the vote and another 21 rebel MPs sided with opposition parties in their bid to stop no deal Brexit.

The Government later withdrew the whip from all 21.

Following that defeat, Mr Johnson announced that he would present a motion calling for a general election in the wake of the Commons vote.

The Prime Minister said: “The Leader of the Opposition has been begging for an election for two years, he has crowds of supporters outside calling for an election.

“I don’t want an election but if MPs vote tomorrow to stop negotiations and compel another pointless delay to Brexit – potentially for years – then that would be the only way to resolve this.

“And I can confirm that we are tonight tabling a motion under the Fixed Terms Parliament Act.”

If the snap election motion is passed, it is likely that the vote will be held on October 15 ahead of the current EU exit date of October 31.

MPs will voted tonight (Wednesday) to pass the so-called by the Prime Minister ‘surrender bill’ with a majority of 29 at the end of the second reading.

They will later vote on whether to have a general election before the next EU summit.
