BBC’s Andrew Neil savages Lib Dem’s ‘out of date’ manifesto in brutal Ed Davey grilling
Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Ed Davey spoke to BBC’s Andrew Neil about the release of his party’s election manifesto. The manifesto was launched with a promise to stop Brexit and build a new future for the UK inside the European Union. The party claims that staying in the EU will give a £50 billion boost to spend on public services.
On climate change, they’re setting a target of generating 80 percent of our electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
Mr Neil savaged the deputy leader for his party’s plan to raise rate of corporation tax from its current 19 percent.
He told Mr Davey: “You claim that a one percent rise in corporation tax to 20 percent will raise an extra £10 billion.
“That’s nonsense.”
The MP denied this, claiming the policy came from Institute for Fiscal Studies figures.
The BBC journalist shot back: “No, I’m sorry, it’s not.
“IFS figures do not show a one percent rise in corporation tax gives you £10 billion.”
Mr Davey defended the policy by citing the government’s own figures.
He said: “In the government’s budget, they had assumed corporation tax would come down by another two percent.
“That was a stated government policy and it was in the manifesto.
“They’re not doing it so therefore we can take that money back.”

Mr Neil shot back: “So your manifesto’s already out of date?
“Because it’s at 19 percent and you don’t get £10 billion.”
Mr Davey said: “No, it’s not. It’s very simple, Andrew, let me explain it very slowly for you.
“We are being accurate, just let me explain.
“We’re taking the baseline from the Government’s figures.”
