BBC journalist purportedly detained by police in Shanghai

Shocking footage has been posted online reportedly showing the arrest of a “BBC journalist” covering the protests in Shanghai over Covid lockdown restrictions.

A video shot from above shows a number of Chinese police officers grappling a white man to the ground before arresting him and hauling him off. The man in the video has been named online as BBC world journlist Edward Lawrence. Express.co.uk has contacted the BBC for comment.

In another piece of footage the same man wearing a red and black check shirt can be seen being dragged along by police before shouting: “call the consulate now” to someone off camera.

The arrest is said to have been filmed close to the Wulumuqi Road area of Shanghai were riot police have clashed with protesters angry at lockdown restrictions in the city. Scenes at times have turned violent in an unusual example of civil unrest in the communist country.
