BBC Question Time panel in heartbreaking plea amid Meghan and Harry crisis – ‘Up to them’
This week has been a shocking week which has sent tremors across the globe as Iran retaliated against the US for the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they will be stepping down as “senior Royals”. Host Fiona Bruce opened the show in Oxford with the likes of Tory Security Minister Brandon Lewis, Labour’s Clive Lewis and think-tank expert Miatta Fahnbulleh on the panel.
The panel was completed by The Economist’s Anne McElvoy and author Max Hastings.
The show began by discussing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s announcement which emerged earlier this week.
Meghan and Harry have been repeatedly slammed by the public and experts this week following their controversial announcement.
However, the BBC Question Time panel were complimentary of the couple and said that they were both “inspirational” and “hard-working”.
The first question to open the show from the audience was, “Is Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back as senior royals ‘petulant and ill-judged?’”
The comment about the couple’s decision being “petulant and ill-judged” was mentioned in The Times yesterday.
Clive Lewis said, “no it isn’t” and said that Meghan has been “a breath of fresh air for our monarchy”.
He said: “She has been a breath of fresh air for our monarchy.
“She’s been a role model, inspirational, her work with charities, in particular with the victims of Grenfell has been outstanding.
“I think the way she has been treated by our media is little short of disgraceful.”
He claimed to say that some of the media coverage has been racist, a comment that Prince Harry reportedly mentioned.
He added: “I think it’s up to them in the 21st century if they wish to step back from their royal duties.”

Author Max Hastings said Meghan and Harry deserve “tremendous sympathy because it is hell being Royal”.
However, Mr Hastings said he “felt sorry for The Queen in all this”.
