BBC Question Time: Just one day until Brexit… and Remainers still the majority on panel

Tonight’s programme will see Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly and stand-up comedian Geoff Norcott in the Brexit corner to defend the cause of the 52 percent who voted Leave. The Remain side, on the other hand, will be represented by Labour’s Sarah Jones, National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president Minette Batters and entrepreneur Sacha Lord. The Beeb’s decision to host a panel leaning more towards those in favour of Britain’s membership of the bloc comes after the broadcaster was hit with accusations of bias from both the Tories and Labour during the election campaign.

Mr Lord, who is the co-founder of Manchester’s Parklife festival, has been a vocal opponent of Brexit since before the UK voted to cut ties with Brussels almost four years ago.

Dated tweets show the businessman reaching out to his followers in the days before the EU referendum.

He said: “This week less possibly the most important vote of our lifetimes. PLEASE don’t waste it.

“I’m voting REMAIN, REMAIN REMAIN”.

Manchester’s night-life tsar will be joined at the table by Ms Batters, who earlier this month issued a warning about post-Brexit trade deals.

She urged the Government to uphold the UK’s food standards when it sits down at the negotiating table to thrash out agreements in the coming months.

She is the NFU’s first female president in its 112-year history.

Ms Batters, who farms in Wiltshire, has referred to Brexit as “a face-slapping moment” for British farmers.

The pair’s Remain views will be backed up by shadow housing minister Sarah Jones.

She has thrown her weight behind Labour leadership hopeful Sir Keir Starmer in the race to replace Jeremy Corbyn.

Ms Jones, a supporter of a People’s Vote, fiercely defended Labour’s muddled Brexit policy when she appeared on BBC Question Time last October.

Mr Cleverly has been a long-time backer of Brexit but has said he believes it could be a difficult process.

In the past he has said the UK Government’s failure to deliver on the results of the 2016 EU referendum would be “significantly more damaging” than a hard Brexit.

Joining him will be stand-up comedian Mr Norcott, who has dubbed himself “the UK’s only declared Conservative comedian”.

He has criticised the “the EU project, its expansion, its economic inertia, the possibility of it coming unstuck in the medium-term future”.

Writing in iNews on Thursday, Mr Norcott said Brexit Week was so far playing out to be relatively relaxed compared to what he expected.

Tonight’s programme, presented by Fiona Bruce, will be filmed at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens in Derbyshire.

A video posted on Twitter this afternoon shows Ms Bruce giving views an insight into the set-up of the studio.

She said: “It’s going to be a great show on our last night as members of the European Union.”

The programme will kick-off at 10.35pm.
