BBC Question Time horror: Furious race row erupts as panel and audience clash over Meghan

Talking about whether Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should be entitled to profit from their royal status, conversation drew towards whether the UK press has acted racially towards Meghan. Several media outlets have drawn parallels from their title counterparts, apparently revealing how certain tabloid titles have run stories that are bias and racist towards the Duchess of Sussex.

One audience member sparked the debate, and said: “The problem we’ve got with his is that Meghan has agreed to be Harry’s wife and then the press has torn her to pieces.

“Lets be really clear about what this is, lets call it by its name: it’s racism.”

Many members of the crowd applauded this, with equally as many booing.

The audience member continued: “She’s a black woman and she has been torn to pieces.”

Laurence Fox, an actor most known for his appearance in the series, Inspector Lewis, exclaimed: “It’s not racist!”

The audience member continued: “She has been torn to pieces and it absolutely is racism.”

Mr Fox replied: “It’s not racism, we’re the most tolerant and lovely country in Europe – you can’t just be throwing the charge of racism at everybody and its really starting to get boring now.”

The slanging match continued, as the audience member said: “Says a white privileged man, what worries me about your comment is you’re a white privileged male.”

To this, the crowd jeered and booed, while Mr Fox shouted: “Oh god!”

Fiona Bruce attempted to reel the conversation in but failed.

He said: “I can’t help what I am, I was born like this, it’s an immutable characteristic: to call me a white privileged male is to be racist – you’re being racist.”

Ms Bruce simmered the tense atmosphere and said: “I’m not taking a view either way, I’ll just add in that Priti Patel the home secretary, also took the view that it was not racist, I’m not making a judgement on that either way.”

It comes as increased attention has been laid on the press in its reportage of Harry and Meghan, with several sources claiming certain publications to weigh their news less favourably on Meghan’s side.

A BuzzFeed article compiled 20 headline that compared coverage of Megan Markle to Kate Middleton “that may show why she and Prince Harry are cutting off royal reporters”.

The article revealed many UK tabloid pieces showing contrasting and conflicting angles on very similar stories.

It wasn’t the only time Mr Fox got a reaction from the crowd, having moments earlier called-out his colleagues as “preachers” in the face of the climate crisis and the government’s decision to bail out regional airline provider, Flybe, with tax payer money.

Ms Bruce asked Mr Fox: “Do you think helping out a company like Flybe which obviously saves a lot of people money and jobs too, is commensurate with the climate crisis.

“We had David Attenborough talking today about the moment of the climate crisis being now.”

Mr Fox replied: “I think people will probably do what’s cheapest, won’t they?

“It depends whether flying or the train is cheaper, and I’m not so against flying, sorry.”

Ms Bruce replied: “Obviously as an actor you have to fly all over the place?”

He replied: “Yes, the carbon foot print is huge.

“But obviously we make up for it by preaching to everyone else how they should change their lifestyles.”
