BBC Newsnight: Brexiteer condemns ‘cowardly Corbyn’ after Labour maintains election stance

In a furious rant, the Conservative MP accused Mr Corbyn of “chickening out” of going to the polls as he is concerned Prime Minister Boris Johnson would win a better majority. Mr Johnson has previously said the only way to solve the Brexit deadlock would be to hold a general election. So far this week, he has suffered a series of embarrassing defeats, with Remainers aiming to halt any chance of a no deal Brexit being carried out.

Speaking to the show’s presenter Kirsty Wark, Ms Jenkyns said: “The Prime Minister is right.

“The only way to settle this is an election, but Jeremy Corbyn is chicken-ing out.

“He’s a coward.

“The fact is he doesn’t want to go to an election because he sees the polls are not popular for him and the Labour party.”

It comes as at least a dozen Conservative rebels who defied Mr Johnson’s Government claimed to be plotting their return to politics after being told they will no longer be allowed to stand for the Tories.

According to The Sun, the anti-no deal MPs will aim to claim back their seats from any prospective Conservative candidate which the party will put to try and win the seat.

Among the list are former big-time players in the Conservatives, which include the likes of ex-Chancellor Philip Hammond, one-time leadership candidate Rory Stewart and Caroline Noakes.

The others are David Gauke, Dominic Grieve, Ed Vaizey, Sam Gymiah, Alistair Burt, Steve Brine, Antoinette Sandbach, Margot James and Stephen Hammond.

The Government is expected to call for a snap election again on Monday.

Under the terms of the Fixed Terms Parliament Act, a supermajority of two-thirds, 434 votes is required for a nap election to take place.

In the last vote, only 354 MPs actually voted.

The entirety of the SNP, Sinn Fein and Green contingent in Westminster did not vote, along with one Liberal Democrat, 28 Independents, two Tories and 288 Labour MPs.

The entirety of the DUP MPs joined 284 Tories, one independent and three Labour MPs in voting for a snap election.

Unless an earlier election is triggered by some means, there will be no general election until May 5, 2022.

An alternative method of calling a general election under the act is a vote of no confidence.

If the Government is defeated in this vote, then there is a 14 day window in which the same or an alternative government can attempt to win an explicit vote of confidence to take power.

Should neither the Prime Minister or any other MP be able to form a Government that can command a majority, this will trigger a general election.

The election must take place at least seven weeks after the vote of no confidence passes.

Mr Johnson has been Prime Minister for 45 days, the shortest term of office of a PM is 119 days by George Canning who died in office.
