BBC debate scandal: Statement in full after imam ‘zionist’ comments unearthed
Abdullah Patel featured as a guest on Tuesday night’s debate as he put a question to the panel of Tory leadership candidates. But it has since emerged a Twitter account claiming to be of the Muslim leader made past anti-Israel tweets. One of the tweets from the account – @AbdullahPatel94 – read: ”Every Political figure on the Zionist’s payroll is scaring the world about Corbyn. They don’t like him. He seems best suited to tackle them!” The account also shared an image endorsing the relocation of Israel to the US as a way of solving the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Forced to defend its actions, the programme’s editor Rob Burley said routine checks had been carried out beforehand.
He said: “It was AFTER the show that Mr Patel reactivated his account revealing his tweets.
“We wouldn’t have put him on the programme if these were public before broadcast, but they were not.
“We also carried out a number of other routine checks which didn’t uncover anything untoward.”
Mr Patel has been suspended from all school duties at Al-Ashraf Primary School where he is deputy head.
The Twitter account has been taken down.
