The BBC Newsnight host slammed Dominic Cummings for “breaking the rules” following his trip to Durham while displaying coronavirus symptoms during the lockdown period. However, enraged viewers took to social media to share their concerns regarding the lack of impartial reporting on the subject displayed by the BBC.

Ms Maitlis said: “Dominic Cummings broke the rules, the country can see that, and it’s shocking the Government cannot.

“The longer ministers and the Prime Minister tell us he worked with them, the more angry the response to this scandal is likely to be.

“He was the man, remember, who always got the public mood, he tagged the lazy label of ‘elite’ on those who disagreed.

“He should understand that public mood. One of fury, contempt, and anguish.

“He made those who struggled to keep to the rules feel like fools, and has allowed many more to feel like they can flout them.”

She added: “The Prime Minister knows all this, and despite the resignation of one minister, growing unease from his backbenchers, a dramatic early warning from the polls, and a deep national disquiet, Boris Johnson has chosen to ignore it.”

One Twitter user wrote in response: “The BBC has reached a new low over the Cummings affair. The editorialising and left-wing bias is plain for all to see.

“If they want to be partisan, the public simply should not be forced to pay for it.”

Julia Hartley-Brewer said: “I’m sorry but this is TOTALLY unacceptable from @maitlis, Newsnight and the BBC. The BBC is REQUIRED to be impartial.

“This is a clear breach of their own rules. Commentators (including me) can give their own opinions, BBC presenters cannot.”

Another tweeted: “This is pure propaganda. I was waiting for Maitliss to reveal which Opposition MP she was quoting but, no, all her own work, it seems.”

A fourth Twitter user wrote: “Newsnight is now starting with a monologue telling you what you are supposed to think. We’re being forced to pay for a left-wing version of Fox News.”
