Barry Gardiner attacked over ‘ludicrous’ scaremongering of £27bn NHS drugs bill

The BBC host stated Britain’s current total drug bill from all over the world is £18 billion. He then quizzed Mr Gardiner on how the Labour Party were arguing a trade deal with America would add an extra £26 billion a year to that drugs bill. The Labour MP argued his party were quoting the findings of Professor Andrew Hill, who is an advisor for the World Health Organisation.

Mr Neil said: “Our total drugs bill from all over the world is £18 billion.”

Mr Gardiner replied: “Yes indeed.”

The BBC host continued: “Not just America from everywhere.

“Your leader is saying that a trade deal with America will add £26 billion a year to the drugs bill.

“How would that work out?”

The Labour MP responded: “Sorry it’s not the Labour Party that is saying that this is Professor Andrew Hill.”

Mr Neil interjected: “Excuse me, Jeremy Corbyn has said with trade deal with America drugs will go up by £500 million a week which is about £26 billion a year, it is almost 27.”

Mr Gardiner quipped: “It is actually £27 billion.

“We’re quoting what Andrew Hill the professor who is the advisor to the World Health Organisation himself has said.”

The BBC host then asked: “Do you know what assumption he made to get the £26 billion?”

Mr Gardiner replied: “He said if we were paying the same prices as the Americans were paying for those drugs.”

Andrew Neil clarified: “What he said was if we paid American prices for drugs we bought from all over the world.

“It is ludicrous and you know that the figure is scaremongering.”
