Two bar staff from Chester in Cheshire are raising money for an independent animal rescue charity after taking an extreme marathon challenge over 24 hours.
Halle Kisby, 20, and Callum Macmillan, 26, both work at Alexander’s Live in Chester and decided to complete the challenge after being inspired after watching someone on social media do a simliar charity event.

They began their marathon with a 3.22 mile run at 3pm on December 3, and concluded at 2pm the following day, having run a mile every hour.

Their efforts raised more than £1,000 for Skylor’s Animal Rescue North Wales.

Skylor’s is a small, family-run charity based in Dobshill, Flintshire, which rescues abandoned dogs and ex-racing greyhounds from Ireland.

It also seeks to help reunite lost dogs with their owners.

Talking about how they decided which charity to raise money for, Ms Kisby told Express.co.uk: “We definitely wanted a local charity.”

Mr Macmillan added: “We started looking at different shelters in the nearby area… we went and met the lovely people that run it [Skylor’s] and saw all the dogs there. We were absolutely heartbroken.”

“… They had a mastiff-cross called Bear, who was lovely and cried for attention. Just a massive dog with a big golden heart.”

Despite being a small independent charity, the organisation has rescued and rehomed more than 100 animals and carries out checks after rehoming to ensure the situation works for all involved.

Skylor’s recently took in five orphaned puppies that were under three weeks old and are being raised by hand.

Talking about the challenge itself, Ms Kisby told Express.co.uk how difficult the initial run was, describing it as “the hardest 5k I’ve ever done… but once we started getting into a routine, it was alright.”

Mr Macmillan added: “I reckon out of four of the miles, I got around half an hour’s nap in between.”

“I was very confident going into this, but was definitely humbled by the end of it.”

The pair encountered freezing conditions during the night but concluded their marathon with a one-mile dog walk with friends, family, and some of the staff and rescue animals from the charity at Chester racecourse.

“The walk at the end was lovely… we got to see some of the dogs we had met before again,” Ms Kisby added.

Despite the pair’s initial goal being just £200, they went on to raise £1,085.

Ms Kisby said: “We got to £200 quite quickly thanks to family and close friends… and during the run my phone was lighting up all the time with people donating.”

After completing their challenge in early December, the friends will now be running 200 kilometres between them in January to continue to raise money for the charity.

In a post on social media, Skylor’s Animal Rescue North Wales stated: “We’re so proud of Halle and Callum for doing this to help us out.”

“We thank them both from the bottom of our hearts.”
