Bank holiday 2019 calendar: When is the next Bank Holiday in the UK? When is May Day?
Scores of Britons basked in glorious sunshine and sizzling heat over the four-day weekend, running from Good Friday until Easter Monday. Yesterday was officially named the warmest Easter Monday on record by the Met Office across the entire UK. Temperatures reached 25C at Heathrow and Northolt in London, beating the previous record of 24C in the Solent in 2011. Weather records were also broken in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, after highs of 24.2C, 23.6 and 21.4C were reached respectively.
The majority of Britons are returning to workplaces and schools today, likely to have a case of the back-to-work blues.
If that sounds like you then do not despair as the next bank holiday is not that far away.
But when is the next UK Bank Holiday?
The next bank holiday in the UK is on May 6. The day first became a bank holiday in 1978 and is marked on the first Monday in May.
May 1 is not marked as a public holiday unless it falls on a Monday.
England, Wales and Northern Ireland commonly refer to the bank holiday as May Day.
In Scotland, the date is known as the Early May Bank Holiday.
May Day has its origins as a Roman festival marking the start of summer seasons, with popular traditions including maypole dancing.
Increasingly, it has become associated with celebrating international workers’ rights.
How many bank holidays are there in May?
There are two bank holidays in May and the second one is on May 27, officially known as the Spring Bank Holiday.
Again it is a nationwide bank holiday for workers and pupils across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
