Meghan Markle, 38, and Prince Harry, 38 expected to raise their one-year-old son Archie Harrison in the USA following their step away from the Royal Family. While Meghan and Harry chose not to give Archie an official title at birth he may be given one in future.
Male members of the Royal Family traditionally receive peerages on their wedding days.
This was the case for both Prince William and Prince Harry who became the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex when they married.
Whether this custom will apply to Archie if and when he ever marries remains to be seen but there is no doubt the youngster will receive at least one royal title in future.
When Archie’s grandfather Prince Charles becomes king, then Archie will automatically become a Prince.
Constitutional expert, Iain MacMarthanne explained: In the case of Archie things change on the death of the Queen.
“At that moment, by law, Archie will become whether he chooses to be or not HRH Prince Archie of Sussex for life.
“At his death, the HRH dies too, he can pass on to any male heir the title Duke of Sussex, but not HRH or Prince.
“This comes from George V’s letters patent of 1917 regulating the HRH.”
Archie is also set to inherit Prince Harry’s Duke of Sussex title when Harry dies.
While theoretically, Archie could choose to disclaim his dukedom for life the legislation that allows peers to do this was passed in the 1960s, when hereditary peers had rights to sit in the Lords, something no longer applicable.
Whether or not Archie chooses to use his royal titles in future will be his decision to make when he reaches 18.
Archie has been living in Los Angeles with his parents since March and has not been in Britain since last November.

Meghan and Harry’s decision to leave the royal bubble behind was in part due to they wish to give Archie more privacy.
Following the announcement of their royal step down Prince Harry gave a speech at a charity dinner where he touched on his wish for a “more peaceful life.”
Prince Harry said: “What I want to make clear is we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you.
“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding.
“Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.”
Harry added: “I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”
Last week Meghan and Harry launched legal action in the US after drones were allegedly used to take pictures of their infant son Archie.
A complaint filed in Los Angeles, California, claims an unnamed individual photographed 14-month-old Archie at the Sussexes’ home during the coronavirus lockdown.
The royal couple have claimed the pictures were an invasion of privacy.
