Baby Archie Harrison: How Meghan and Harry could break tradition with Archie’s wardrobe

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, 2019, and is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first child. The couple have opted to keep much about Archie private, with not even the tot’s godparents released to the public. But will the young royal have to adhere to royal protocol and wear shorts like his older cousins Prince George and Prince Louis?

Often when Prince George, six, and Prince Louis, one, are seen in public they are wearing shorts – and this is due to royal traditions.

The tradition is shared among the upper class, aristocracy and royals which sees young boys dressed in shorts.

Etiquette expert William Hanson explained the reason behind the young royal’s dress code.

He told Harper’s Bazaar: “It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts.

”Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.

“Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban.

“And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”

This may be a rule Meghan and Harry follow for their son, however, with some protocols already broken when it comes to Archie – it may not be surprising if they opt not to.

The Sussexes did not follow the tradition laid out by the Cambridge’e when Archie was born, declining the chance to pose outside the hospital with their newborn.

They instead held a photocall in Windsor Castle, two days after their son was born.

They also kept his christening private, which again differed from the baptisms of Kate and Prince William’s children.

For Charlotte, Louis and George’s christenings, photographers captured guests arriving and leaving, and the details of who was the children’s godparents were released to the public.

However, despite Archie’s christening taking place nearly a month ago, not much is known about the ceremony.

Only the guests included in the official photos are known, and the couple has not divulged any more.

Present in the photos were: Meghan, Harry, Archie, Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William, Kate, Doria Ragland, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

The Queen did not attend as she had a prior engagement that day.
